In Yiddish with english Subtitles

The film pays tribute to the dead, to a language, and to an entire culture. In one continuous shot, SHTTL shows the lives, loves, and inner conflicts within a Yiddish-speaking shtetl on the border between Ukraine and Poland – one day before the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union. A young, aspiring filmmaker returns from Kyiv to his village and plans to run away with his true love who is engaged to another man, disrupting the balance of the whole town. A day in the life of a Jewish Ukrainian village before it completely disappears... Today, there are no such villages in existence; the film team fully reconstructed a traditional ‘Shtetl’ outside of Kyiv, which was planned to be turned into a museum, before it was ironically destroyed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

After the film screening there will be a discussion with a Ukrainian historian of Jewish studies Vladyslava Moskalets.

Der Film zollt den Toten, der Sprache und der ganzen Kultur, die nun vergangen ist, Tribut. In einer einzigen Aufnahme gedreht, zeigt SHTTL das Leben, die Lieben und die inneren Konflikte in einem jiddischsprachigen Schtetl an der Grenze zwischen der Ukraine und Polen – einen Tag vor dem Einmarsch der Nationalsozialisten in die Sowjetunion. Ein junger, aufstrebender Filmemacher kehrt aus Kyjiw in sein Heimatdorf zurück und plant, mit seiner großen Liebe – die jedoch bereits mit einem anderen Mann verlobt ist – durchzubrennen; damit bringt er das Gleichgewicht der gesamten Gemeinde ins Wanken. Ein Tag im Leben eines jüdisch-ukrainischen Dorfes, kurz bevor es für immer von der Landkarte verschwindet... Heute existieren solche Dörfer nicht mehr; für die Produktion wurde außerhalb von Kyjiw ein traditionelles „Schtetl“ vollständig rekonstruiert. Geplant war, dieses später in ein Museum umzuwandeln – bis es, in einer bitteren Ironie des Schicksals, im Zuge der russischen Invasion in die Ukraine im Jahr 2022 komplett zerstört wurde.
